STYLE & TRENDS HOW THEY DO IT
He's a jacket junkie with eclectic taste

May 1, 2008

Eric Short has a thing about jackets. He has 13 in his closet at Rollins College in Winter Park, where he is finishing his sophomore year.

A favorite is a red and yellow Marine Academy letterman jacket from 1984.

"I can only wear it about two days of the year. It's just too hot in Florida. But I like to just look at it," says Short, 20.

Another favorite is the vintage tuxedo he bought from the costume shop at Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs, where he designed costumes for several school plays.

"I wore the tux to my senior prom. I've worn it to formals and balls -- with dress pants and with bluejeans," says Short.

He also wore the vintage tux to the opening night of Project Fashionista, a runway event he produced at Rollins last year to raise money for Orlando's Coalition for the Homeless.

"I'm a big fan of just putting a mix of things together, combining preppy and fashion-forward. I'm a huge fan of jeans, especially Hudsons, but I'll also throw on a fitted jacket or blazer. It's a more tailored look, slimmer and cleaner. And I do a lot of layering with cardigans and vests," says Short, who has a job at the J. Crew store in the Mall at Millenia.

"Last week we got in a shipment of suits with vests," he says. "Every guy in the store bought one. A vest goes with everything."

His favorite labels include Burberry, D&G and Dsquared, and he approves of the eclectic/preppy style of bands such as Vampire Weekend, who team cowl-neck shirts and sweater vests with chinos and boat shoes.

He admires "anything Steve McQueen-esque," and is a big fan of vintage shops.

"I like pieces that are a little more aged -- tie clips and pocket watches," he says. "That's what I'm looking for now: a pocket watch."

Spoken like a true TYG.
